Team arrives to start process of land
acquisition for new eastbound road
A project to build a new highway from Texas into Louisiana at
Logansport took a positive turn Wednesday after having seen delays
for the past few years. The go-ahead signal has been flashed says
the team, and work will now begin in earnest on securing properties
along the route. Officials working on the massive undertaking met
with local townsfolk and officials to begin discussions of just how
this plan will get underway. Lauren Joyner, PEC real estate manager and consultant to Department
of Transportation and Development (DOTD) said simply they will
follow the plan. The plan which was available for everyone to view
will simply be to formally begin seeking owners of the property
along the route for the new eastward bound two-lane highway which
will skirt the properties along Chestnut Street and on to the
intersection of US Hwy 84 and La Hwy 5 where the two highways will
connect. Within the next several weeks property owners along the route can
expect to be contacted by individuals via telephone or personal
visits to begin the process of land acquisition
Citizens suggest how to spend recent financial gains
Recently lease bonus monies related to the Haynesville Shale have
filled its coffers to overflowing. That, plus $150,000 given to
them by the DeSoto Parish Police Jury in its attempt to give back to
the people what is rightfully theirs added another bump in income to
the village.
So
now comes the question: what do we do with it, which was basically
the opening statement made by Village Mayor Clayton Davis at the
outset of the meeting, which began at 6 p.m. It didn’t take long
for the group to come up with several good ideas, about 40 minutes
to be exact. Another point made clear by a show of hands, although the mayor
reminded the crowd that the show of hands would not constitute a
legal vote, was that everyone present supported paying off the
remaining indebtedness against the sewer system, a debt that would
continue for the next 30 years otherwise. “This would take about
$230,000 of the money, and ultimately save us $186,000 in interest.
It would return the annual payment of $15,000 now being made to
that indebtedness which in turn would be freed up to spend in other
endeavors,” the mayor explained.
SWEET TEA-SWEET TYMES" Event Attracts Visitors from Around the Area
The recent "Sweet Tea-Sweet
Tymes" event, sponsored by the Grand Cane Preservation Commission (GCPC),
Historic Grand Cane Association (HGCA) and DeSoto Arts Council (DAC)
attracted visitors from Minden, Bossier City, Shreveport, Rodessa,
Natchitoches and as well as local citizens. The main attraction was
the DAC Rummage Sale, which began at 7:00 AM and maintained a steady
stream of shoppers throughout the day. DAC reports a successful
fund raiser with proceeds going toward their various projects.
The GCPC representatives Sharon Deas and Edith Herring were kept
busy serving Traditional Southern Iced Sweet Tea and Old Fashioned
Tea Cookies, furnished by the Village of Grand Cane Restaurant.
Representatives from LaChip that gave out insurance information to
visitors joined them on Main Street. An often-heard comment by the out-of-town visitors was that the
taste of sweet tea and tea cookies in our lovely old Historic
District brought back happy childhood memories. The next "Sweet
Tea-Sweet Tymes" event is scheduled for Saturday, August 14 from 11
am - 2 pm and will feature free activities for children, including
an arts/crafts tent and the "Bounce House" Ministry of the Grand
Cane Baptist Church. The 4 O'Clock Sundown Band will be on hand to
provide entertainment. Area children are invited to bring their
parents and lawn chairs so they can sit a spell and sip a little
iced sweet tea
